Team Captain: Stuart Payne
Other Members: Rowan Hill, Peter Kneale
Aircraft: 1985, J-model Mooney (M20J), VH-SJT
Stuart Payne has been flying since 1981, but only in 2009 ventured into the world of aircraft ownership when he purchased a half share in a 1985 J-model Mooney, VH-SJT . He raced in the 2006 event (for the first time) and enjoyed it so much so that he volunteered as the Treasurer in the record-breaking 2009 and 2012 events, and is filling the same role again now again in 2015! Flying with co-owner Rowan Hill, Stuart is keen to spend a fortnight watching Australia disappear under SJT’s wings as they fly in this great event once again.
Rowan Hill has been flying since 2002 but has taken his flying to new heights since purchasing a half share in SJT. With co-owner Stuart and some other merry Mooney pilots at Jandakot, Rowan particularly enjoys the camaraderie and piloting challenge that formation flying offers. Rowan currently includes a night rating with a twin rating the next step. Rowan is counting down the days until he and Stuart will practically circumnavigate Australia in SJT (again!), visiting communities which due to their remoteness, they may never have otherwise seen. Rowan enjoys volunteering for a good cause which gives back to the community and which he has a passion for. Rowan believes that taking up the position of Race Manager and competing in this year's RFDS Outback Air Race will provide this opportunity.
Peter Kneale was part of the 2012 Outback Air Race committee alongside Stuart and Rowan, and flew in team Superfly. He is ready to do it all again, competing in and organising the 2015 event, however this time flying as part of team Bad Mooney Rising. Peter recevied his PPL in 2010 and has about 160 hours however, at the time of writing, none in a Mooney!
