Iain Emslie

Born in Colchester England in 1938 and immigrated to Australia with his family as a young boy in 1952 and has lived in Australia ever since. He is a retired teacher and pharmacist and has been flying since 1968.

Iain is happily married to Margaret and they have enjoyed 51 years of married bliss (well done!!). They have 3 children, 6 grand children and 1 great grandchild.

Most of his Flying was done in North West of WA from either Meekatharra or Geraldton. His first outback landing was flying into the Landor Races west of Meekatharra. He was in the last aircraft to take off from The Mount Newman Homestead landing area before it was closed due to the start of mining operations in the region.

Iain often accompanied the RFDS pilots out of Meekatharra during routine rounds of Newman, Wiluna, Sandstone and Mount Magnet in the late 60's. He moved to Geraldton in the early 70's and continued flying out of Geraldton in the North West.

Enjoying his retirement in Perth has not done much flying since retiring but has renewed enthusiasm for flying and has completed his pilot’s refresher course and is looking forward to his first Outback Air Race.

Greg Smith

Born in Treorchy Wales in 1952 and immigrated to South Africa as a young lad with his family in 1958 where he spent most of his life. Greg is married to Lorraine and they have 5 children and 7 grandchildren. They immigrated to Australia in 1999 and have lived in the Northern suburbs of Perth ever since.

Greg is a Refractory Engineer and has been in the profession for 37 year. He has been in private business since 1985. He joined WA born John Gilbert (CA) as a senior partner in Sila Australia in Canning Vale in 1998.

He has no personal experience in piloting aircraft but has travelled the world extensively and has flown in and around South Africa in a variety of smaller aircraft both commercial and private. He is fascinated by the great work carried out by the Flying Doctor Service. After hearing about the Outback Air Race in 2009 he added the 2012 Race to his ‘Bucket List’ and is looking forward to sharing the experience with a great friend.

OOPS!! Forgot to mention Greg and Iain are golf addicts and will be playing golf all the way down the East Coast of Australia on the way back to Perth from Darwin – Good luck gentlemen!
