Leg 5: Cloncurry

Longreach to Cloncurry

Distance: 270nm

Date: Sunday 2nd September

Leg Sponsor:
Departed Longreach for Cloncurry. Thanks to leg five sponsors BENTLEY SYSTEMS. We were warmly welcomed by community members thanks to the Cloncurry Shire Council. After being driven to our hotels and settling in, we were picked up for a welcome afternoon tea at John Flynn Place.
That evening, a fantastic fundraising event was held in our honour in the brand new Cloncurry Community Precinct Open Space. We all had a great time at this event, meeting the locals including some special seniors. The MC was a classic, reciting poetry and demonstrating his outstanding expertise as an auctioneer.

Some fines were awarded including to one of the Flying Cockies’ members who shall remain nameless (OK, Allan – sorry I cracked under the pressure) for sitting in the back seat and devouring the snacks that had been bought for all three team members; TLC for not shutting their cargo door properly and starting up with it open; Neil’s Flying Circus for leaving their GPS on to track their somewhat limited movements while they had a nap in their room; and last but not least, a certain father and son who are part of Bad Mooney Rising, who were observed sharing bonding moment on Father’s Day standing side by side facing the airstrip and having a whizz in full view of departing air craft. Classy. Talk about bringing the race into disrepute. Obviously this last minute fluid expulsion allowed for clear minds, as Bad Mooney Rising were the Leg Five leg winners.
